Controls Engineer

JOB TITLE: Controls Engineer
DEPARTMENT: Equipment
REPORTS TO: Equipment Engineering Manager
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
SALARY GRADE/LEVEL/RANGE: Salary

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE: Responsible for the design, specification, upgrades, commissioning, and troubleshooting of plant equipment control systems. Works closely with the mechanical and maintenance personnel to analyze root causes of equipment failures and propose/perform corrective actions. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • For new equipment and equipment modifications - provide design/specification/start-up/commissioning for the controls portion of the project.
  • For existing equipment - provide troubleshooting of electrical and electronic control problems and breakdowns. 
  • Perform modifications in PLC's/drives/control electronics as needed for new products or new production techniques.
  • Perform evaluations of existing equipment controls and network systems. Perform upgrades as required. 
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area
  • Work in accordance with all company policies and procedures.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Expertise in PLC ladder logic design and troubleshooting.
    • Confident in multiple automation OEM's such as Rockwell, A/B, Siemens.
    • Software programs such as Rockwell Studio 5000, RSLogix.
  • Expertise in motor controllers/VFD's, such as Parker, ABB, A/B.
  • Experience in AutoCAD or Solidworks to make or modify electrical and controls prints.
  • Experience in SCADA software such as Ignition.
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure during troubleshooting of manufacturing equipment breakdown. 
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with good prioritization skills.
  • Self-starter, with solid oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to direct the work of assistants and helpers.
  • Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment.
  • Physical abilities include lifting 20-25lbs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK: Full Time, salary w/ medical and 401K benefits. May need to work outside of normal hours including call-ins, extended shifts, weekends, and holidays on short notice.

TRAVEL: Some travel 

EDUCATION: BS in Electrical or Electronics Engineering preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 

  • 2-5 plus years in a similar role in a manufacturing environment
  • Plastic processing equipment experience preferred
